« MOVIE NIGHT June 24th : Joi... | Front page | Are You Coming to the Rally... »

The new round of speech regulations promoted under the title "DISCLOSE ACT" has passed the House and is now before the U.S. Senate.  Senators Charles Schumer, Russ Feingold and Patrick Leahy claim the DISCLOSE ACT is necessary to counter the influence of "special interests" on the election process:

http://www.DiscloseAct.com/

We are part of a group of senators fighting to rein in the increased influence of special interest money this decision will unleash and save our electoral process.

To combat the new, unregulated corporate influence over elections, we just unveiled the DISCLOSE Act -- because Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections.

But without your support, our legislation is never going to win the day -- we need to build support all around the country, and we need your help to do it.

As President Obama has said, the Supreme Court has given "a green light to a new stampede of special interest money."

But this decision doesn't just affect elections. It has the potential to change the very way we live in America.

This new set of speech regulations has drawn a fair deal of criticism--even in Nancy Pelosi's hometown.  Via the San Francisco Chronicle:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/06/28/EDMI1E66PS.DTL

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR5175, also known as the Disclose Act, by a 219-206 vote. "Disclose," you see, is an acronym for "Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections."

The measure's author, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., also happens to chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee - so you know that the bill has nothing to do with helping Democrats retain their seats. (Just kidding.)

Two Republicans voted for the measure, 36 Democrats voted against it. The bill now goes to the Senate, where it deserves to molder. This bill may have passed largely unnoticed, but if the Senate passes HR5175 as is, with its provision to activate the law in 30 days - conveniently in time for November's midterm elections but before the Federal Election Commission would have a chance to draft careful rules - voters should see this as a blatant attempt to rig the system...

"We don't really think the intent of the bill is to withstand scrutiny in the courts," said Jeff Patch of the Center for Competitive Politics.

No lie. Here's a more honest acronym for Disclose: Democrats Intend to Stifle Contrary Leanings with Selective Enforcement.

What do you think of the DISCLOSE ACT?  Please share your thoughts BELOW...

by R Lipscomb  2010-06-29 12:18:45
The Disclosure Act is simply another maneuver by the Democrats to "guarantee" their positions and powers. Every action should be taken to dismantle and/or kill this Act.
by Marcella Porter  2010-06-29 12:32:30
It is something with too much control.....We don't want it!!!
by Phillip Dennis  2010-06-29 12:34:02
I believe the Disclose act is designed to penalize bloggers and tea party groups. The NRA sold us down the river by negotiating a carve out for themselves! We must be prepared to fight for our 1st Amendment rights!!
by Andrew Piziali  2010-06-29 12:47:53
This act is simply another attempt to quash Americans' God-given right to free speech in order to effect a favorable liberal outcome in the fall election. It should be vigorously opposed!
by Jane haden  2010-06-29 12:49:55
I think it is an attempt to disclose who votes for who there by having a list of who is agginst what the Socialist are for. It is also a way to control those in Unions through fear of voting their personal values, there by causing fear of retaliation to any members voteing contrary to what is expected by the Union Bosses. Freedom is indangered further. I hate this. It is awful trickery. Should we think of "treason"?
by Myrna rheudasil  2010-06-29 12:55:50
I trust the Supreme Court on this issue and suspect that this bill is
an "end around"effort.

We don't want it!!!
by Dalia Morales  2010-06-29 13:18:41
This will only help in keeping our voices and opinions from being heard. NO!!!!
by Dan  2010-06-29 13:22:31
It's a desperate attempt to shut us down! We need to FIGHT THIS NOW!
by  patti_2  2010-06-29 13:26:20
Against this bill/one more government interference. yes, NRA betrayed us. Is this another bill we will get to totally "see" when it passes?
by Mary Lou Sumner  2010-06-29 13:31:08
I vigorously oppose this latest socialist tactic to suppress us conservatives even more than we have been since Obama took office. NO,NO,NO! How can we let our reps know how we feel about this latest outrage?
by Frank Timmins  2010-06-29 13:31:50
"Special Interest Money"? What a joke. George Soros doesn't represent "special interests"? It's simply more democrat manipulation of the public for political gain. It is hypocrisy of the highest order.
by Beckie White  2010-06-29 13:36:33
it's like Card Check! For everyone! Pass ;)
by Mark  2010-06-29 13:56:45
As my GrandDad said, All I ever wanted was an unfair advantage. Well, this is how the Dems try to box in those seeking liberty in an important election.
by Connie  2010-06-29 14:07:25
Yet another attempt to subvert the Supreme Court and the U.S. Constitution...it needs to be stopped!
by Sheryl Kelly Howieson  2010-06-29 14:09:14
Well, the word censure comes to mind at first and then a blatant violation of our freedom of speech, and lastly throw in COWARDICE by the democrats--they know we are going to run right over them in November so they foolishly believe that they can stop us. Truly repulsive, eh? The good thing is that it won't work...
by PATRICK MCCLARNEY  2010-06-29 14:58:48
I haven't heard a good idea from a democrat since Harry Truman
by Clark Hise  2010-06-29 15:06:06
The DISCLOSE act is the most blatant anti-first amendment piece of legislation since the McCain/Feingold campaign finance reform bill, struck down by the recent Supreme Court decision, it is attempting to replace. Hopefully, it will be stopped in the Senate.
by jerry metcalf  2010-06-29 15:07:37
Anything that Shumer is for I am against. This disclose bill should be killed.
by Jake Pickens  2010-06-29 15:15:20
Enough is enough, when are our elected officials in DC going to understand that their primary function is to see to it that this nation is defended. The last laws that have been passed have had nothing to do with the security of this nation. Instead they have done nothing except to try to see to it that they get reelcted. I agree with a lot of folks that it is time to have a thoropugh house cleaning in both houses but the best time to do that is in the primary elections. The problem with that being done is that too many of the younger generation are to busy having a party and pay no attention about the people running this country. Most of them have no earthly idea of what is at stake in this country. I thhink it is time that we mmobolize and excite the 21 to 35 age group and get them envolved in the process. We can'tdepend on our school system to educate them.
by Mark Montgoemery  2010-06-29 15:15:56
The Disclose Act needs to be drfeated! Just another one sided social idea.
by James Dearmore II  2010-06-29 15:33:27
I am vehemently opposed to the bill in its present form or in any other form thedy might arrange it. It should be killed dead in the Senate, then buried never to be revived.
by William Sendelback  2010-06-29 15:39:59
This is just another rediculous Progressive attempt to limit our freedoms and change our Constitution.
by Robert Garrett  2010-06-29 15:40:12
Clearly meant to stifle criticism of encumbants/democrats. Blatantly unconstitutional stifling of free speech. Heres hoping it doesn't pass, but if it does it should be ignored and dare them to take us to court.
by DlsLibertyBelle  2010-06-29 15:43:33
Another attempt to silence those that disagree. Who are the two Republicans that voted for it?
by iva sheetz  2010-06-29 15:45:09
I am adamantly opposed to the disclose act. If democrats are for it, it can't be good for us conservatives. Thank you
by Mike Williamson  2010-06-30 01:00:06
This legislation is designed to enable another unnecessary regulation against the opposition when the Democarts are already the ones with the largest number of campaign contributions that need to be tracked and restricted.
by Melba Jeffus  2010-06-29 15:54:48
In principle, it sounds like a good idea until you continue to learn more and realize that it's just another attempt of the Democratic party to leverage the elections in their favor. I am sick of the unions and big special interest groups in this country thinking that they are above the law. I feel like I am watching the disappearance of every ideal and princilple that I have held dear to me my entire life. If the people in this country don't wake up and see the handwriting on the walls, I will see my country go from a democracy to a socialize, Marxist nation before the end of my generation. The current administration is bankrupting our nation and no one seems able to stop the process. My greatest saddness is for our children and grandchildren. My father was part of the "greatest generation" and our children and grandchildren will part of the "enslaved generation." This country needs to get on our knees and beg God to help us. That's our only hope now.
by alan marek  2010-06-29 16:05:11
I have never seen a Congress so intent at blindsiding the American People in all my 60 years. They are clearly working for themselves and special interest, not the people that elected them and certainly NOT the way The Founding Fathers intended. This bill should be voted down!
Thank you, Alan Marek
by s c browning  2010-06-29 16:06:21
The Disclose Act is just a way to slow down or stop groups from campaigning against another party or bill etc without lots of pain. I sent emails to all Congressmen and to Conolly and Hutchins to VOTE NO NO NO! Stop the Disclose bill now. The Democrats never offer anything unless it will aid their agenda, and this is another example. We must impeach Obama and throw out the rest.
by Joyce  2010-06-29 16:18:55
Yet another attempt by this administration to take over our rights. The battle rages on--don't weaken folks.
by Mike Giles  2010-06-29 16:19:16
Just more of the same - Obama and his cronies want to control the election process just like Chavez does in Venezuela. They have no understanding of nor sympathy with the 1st Amendment.
by Sherman Sims  2010-06-29 16:21:02
I would say that anything that the Democrats are trying to push through these days is suspecious! I'm against it for just that reason. The Senate needs to use their 60 votes to stop it and any other bill that's being rammed through by the Democrats in the House. At this point, I'm in favor of stopping any bill that the Democrats are trying to pass; they don't seem to want to consider anything the Republicans want to pass, so let's return the favor. I don't care if we do have a Congress that passes nothing...that's better than the alternative. November is not far off and hopefully the Republicans can take control of the House and the Senate!! Maybe we can turn some of this Liberal Legislation around then.
by Tony Tolleson  2010-06-29 16:22:41
Combine the DISCLOSE act with the "internet Kill switch" and they add up to nothing less that fascism and the abolition of free speech. How ironic is it that in the not so distant shadows of June 19, the first black US President wants to effectively abolish the First Amendment? I fear I will be telling my grandchildren someday very soon, "I remember when the US Constitution actually meant something." I am now hoping for change in November of 2010 and November of 2012, when elected representatives again begin looking out for the interests of the people they serve, and not their own interests. Having taken the Oath of Office myself, and having taken it seriously, it is clear to me that all too many of our elected officials - at all levels - have simply abandoned their Oath and their allegiance to the electorate.
by Blane Tresedder  2010-06-29 16:45:01
This is another attack by the progs on our constitution. They are desperate to stay in power!! They must be stopped!!!! Nov. can't get here soon enough!!!!
by Louie Rousseau  2010-06-29 16:45:06
I do not favor any bill that threatens a group expressing their view bycompelling them to reveal their supporters. After all, the Bill of Rights does guarentee free speach. This does not mean that an individual has no responsibility to do their homework to determine if a proposed position is truly stated.

by Lori Weideman  2010-06-29 16:56:13
The Disclosure act is another attempt to give Democrats even more control over elections. It must not be allowed!
by steve  2010-06-29 17:12:38
Supreme court got it right. The Dems should be called what they really are: Left-wing Liberal Losers, because they have won there elections by hiding the money, and then we find out all the crooked crap after the election. Remember, the only good Democrat is Ted Kennedy, that happens to be dead. This is the only way I could find to like him!
by J Forrest  2010-06-29 17:17:20
The Democrats just keep on giving! We can look forward to a Republican House and Senate majority in November. I have contacted the NRA and resigned my membership!
by John King  2010-06-29 17:38:31
The Disclose Act is just another "strong-arm" tactic of the Left. They know that it would hamper Republicans while not affecting the Democrat fund raising methods one bit. It should be defeated in the Senate, or repealed once the Republicans return to power (IF EVER).
by Joh King John.King@tx.rr.com  2010-06-29 17:53:35
I need some likeminded Conservative e-mail contacts to share in the conservative e-mails that I receive from others. You can reach me at (John.King@tx.rr.com)
and by the way the Disclosure Act should be killed in the Senate. If not, then it should be repealed when the Republicans get back in power (IF EVER).
by margmcc  2010-06-29 18:02:25
This is a way to shutdown the Tea Parties because we have become too effective so they are taking many measures to move their agenda along and win in 2010 and 2012.
by George Bentley  2010-06-29 19:00:53
Even the infamous Hank Johnson [Guam tip over] has determined that unless the DISCLOSE Act passes, "we'll see more Republicans getting elected."
We must take back control of the Congress and take puppets like Hank Johnson and other Democrats out of Obama's hands.
by Dave  2010-06-29 19:01:08
If Obama, Pelosi and Reid are for this bill I know it's and keep them in power. NO Acorn,No socialism, Less Goverment Now!
by Betse Lanier  2010-06-29 19:03:56
The Disclose Act will impede the dissemination of political information by the Tea Party and any other group with ideas contrary to that of our present Congress (most of them anyway)
by Linda McElwrath  2010-06-29 19:29:12
I believe that the above article is "right on". The disclose act is nothing more than a Democratic attempt to get around the Supreme Court decision and silence those of us who are against their big government agenda. I say we do everything we can to oppose this bill!
by Susan L. Davis-Duarte  2010-06-29 20:06:43
Who were the two RINOs that voted for this infamy? If anyone knows, please inform me. Thank you.
by meints Billy K. & Barbara J.  2010-06-29 20:35:29
We have to vote out the old and in with the new, in November.
We need to get the anti-constitution folks out of Washington DC.
Save our country for our children and grandchildren.
by Robert Hill  2010-06-29 20:58:29
Remember folks, the left isn't going to lie down......
by robert miers  2010-06-29 22:42:01
This is a joke, Obama's masters remain carefully hidden except by the frequent visitors (unions)to the white house, the loving media, financial titans, and the hollywood folks who do not hang on to their God and gun ownership.
If this law was needed, it should be examined, however, this administration has been the most secretive and non communicative in modern history. Why would they want to expose any information that they them selves will not even comment on?
Methinks this is another McCain/Finegold trap.
Lastly, start keeping lists of the folks how vote for this 1930's suppression of truth
by harry and sharon hardy  2010-06-29 22:59:01
another ruse of the socialist, excuse me! progressive democrats to shut down ist amendment rights.
we have the right to know both sides of an argument not just the side the damn dems want you to hear.
by Mike Williamson  2010-06-30 00:57:33
It is obvious to me that the Disclose Act is a means for liberals to specifically limit opposing views in terms of time bought as identifying sources of funding will cost as well. This a way of them applying a restriction that they themselves aren't required to endure. This is a nonessential piece of legislation that will also cost tax dollars and is another useless spending excuse devised by Democrats!
by M Braun  2010-06-30 07:31:05
Our form of government is NOT a "democracy" -- it's a REPUBLIC! A democracy is "rule by men" -- or tyranny by a majority. Democracy is just a fancy word for two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. Please...it's not "democrat" vs. "republican" -- 'cause they're all the same! Let's call those who authored this "bill" (no pun intended), and those who support it, what they really are: FASCISTS. Here's a good simple definition of fascism: Fascists hate self-ownership and property rights. We don't need any more "laws and orders" in the city, state or nation. "Kill the bill!" should be the rally cry for every new piece of state and federal legislation and city ordinance! James Fenimore Cooper said it best: "Governments are not formed to achieve, but to protect." Those who feel otherwise need to go. I'm looking forward to a 25% turnover in Congress this November. Our so-called "public servants" in the statehouse and city hall need to be the next to go.
by  Pam  2010-06-30 07:35:37
I am still having a hard time understanding this Disclose Act. Can someone try to explain it with more examples. Thanks
by DOROTHY DYER  2010-06-30 08:49:28
This is just another way of our U.S. Congress is trying to limit our constitutional rights. I hope all citizens will contact their congressional person and ask them not to sign this bill.
This just another way for them to show disrespect to the U.S. citizens.
by CurtisTeaPartyMember  2010-06-30 10:38:53
"KILL THE BILL"
by Eugene Lipnicky  2010-06-30 10:53:26
Most professional polititions don't mind shredding the Constution in order
to stay in power.
by Bruce Barton  2010-06-30 11:47:58
DO YOU have the article on Geo.Soros ?
"WE" need to know who he supports.
----------------------
In 2008, Soros donated $5,000,000,000 to the Democratic National Committee, DNC, to insure Obama's win and wins for many other Alinsky trained Radical Rules Anti-American Socialist. George has been contributing a $ billion plus to the DNC since Clinton came on the scene.
by Tim George  2010-06-30 14:59:14
I think we should contribute to and support constitution supporting individual candidates like Pastor Stephen Brodin. If we cannot do that we are just a lot of hot air and our opinion carries much less weight.
We might even have a leftist in the woodpile.
by Michael  2010-06-30 16:03:48
We absolutely have to get rid of the Democraps any way we can before they completely ruin our country.
by Margaret Schaefer  2010-07-01 09:03:18
Voting has always been a right we have as Americans and I am dissapointed with this bill taking away the trust in the voting system.
by TONY CAMP  2010-07-02 02:02:07
DEFINATELY UN CONSTANTIONAL.
BUT WE NEED TO STOP BECAUSE IT WILL TAKE LONG TIME TO GET IT TO SURRIME C
by tom  2010-07-05 11:28:42
it's just another attempt to grab back power they lost. McCain may not vote for it this time but the other 6 of the "gang of 7" are very political and likely will continue their characterless self interests deal making at our country's expense. I am stunned that the citizens of Maine allow their 2 sens.to act like Canadians every chance they get!!
by Tom Johnson, Tarrant County  2010-07-20 17:51:33
I really do not understand our ooposition to this bill. If we agree with the message, we should not be ashamed to put our name(s) on it. Corporate power is not something I think we consider a grassroots influence. Corporations and lobbying groups/PACs are not individual and should not have the rights of individuals. This act forces CEOs and other groups, religious groups and such, to take responsibility for their activities. I thought we were standing for responsiblity and down to earth, real people, not just those who have or can gather money.
by Debbie ARnett  2010-07-25 17:04:11
I agree to prevent foreign influence in our elections, govt contractors shouldn't be able to spend money- everything else is just more regulation on the people. Shareholders should mandate their Corps to show where the money goes!!!
by Burnie Vaughn  2010-08-28 05:31:25
No more control of speech. We have got to stop this take over of our liberties.
